About the MacColl Clan Tartan
The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacColl as a Clan/Family tartan. The MacColl sett is a bold and handsome design of red and green crossed with blue and black, a warm pattern of the western Highlands, worn in both ancient and modern shades; MacColls may also wear the MacDonald or Stewart of Appin tartan of their old allegiance.

MacColl Heritage
The MacColls have been associated with the shores of Loch Fyne from an early date, in the heart of Campbell country, and the clan shares the common heather badge of Clan Donald. In the feuds of the early 17th century the Loch Fyne MacColls took the side of the MacGregors, and in a fight at Drumochter about 1602 the small clan lost most of its fighting men, including its leader — a blow from which it never fully recovered.
Another branch of the MacColls settled in Appin, where they were the most faithful of followers to the Stewarts of Appin; so close was the bond that a chieftain of the Achnacone Stewarts was traditionally buried with a MacColl lying on either side of him. The MacColls fought in the Appin Regiment in the rising of 1745, and of the Appin men killed or wounded at Culloden, a full third bore the name MacColl. Evan MacColl of Kenmore on Loch Fyne, the Gaelic poet known as the Mountain Minstrel, carried the name into Scottish letters.
