About the MacCallum Clan Tartan

The Scottish Register of Tartans records MacCallum — the same clan as Malcolm — as a Clan/Family tartan. The MacCallum sett is a handsome design of blue and green crossed with black and lifted by a bright yellow line, a cool and dignified pattern of the western Highlands, worn in both ancient and modern shades.

The name comes from the Gaelic Mac Ghille Chaluim, "son of the servant of Calum" — Calum being Saint Columba, the great missionary of the isles — and marks a family dedicated to his service. The clan motto In Ardua Tendit makes MacCallum tartan especially meaningful for family pride and Scottish ancestry gifts.

MacCallum Tartan Pattern and Colours

MacCallum tartan is recognised for its blue and green ground crossed with black and lifted by a bright yellow line — cool, dignified colours of Argyll and the western sea-lochs. Ancient shades appear softer, while modern shades are deeper and more formal.

MacCallum Heritage

The MacCallums were settled in Lorn in Argyll by the close of the 13th century, and in 1414 Reginald MacCallum of Corbarron was made hereditary constable of the castles of Craignish and Lochaffy, an office of real trust in the country of the Campbells. In 1562 the family gained the lands of Poltalloch by Loch Crinan, which became their long home and gave the chiefs their title.

The clan seat is Duntrune Castle, standing above Loch Crinan — one of the oldest continuously inhabited castles on the Scottish mainland, and the setting of the famous tale of the piper who warned his master of a trap and paid dearly for his loyalty. In the late 18th century the chief took the name Malcolm, so that MacCallum and Malcolm are one clan under the chief, Malcolm of Poltalloch. The crest is a tower, the motto In Ardua Tendit.
