About the County Leitrim Tartan
The Leitrim tartan is one of the thirty-two Irish county setts designed by Polly Wittering for the House of Edgar in the 1990s. It is a district tartan — it belongs to the county, not to any family, and anyone with a Leitrim connection may wear it.
The county tartans are modern designs and are not formally sanctioned by the counties; they have earned their standing through adoption, and for a county that lost so many people to emigration, a Leitrim sett is a way of keeping the name alive abroad.
Leitrim Tartan Pattern and Colours
The sett draws on cool teals and greens with darker lines — the water of Lough Allen and the Shannon, the green of small hillside fields, and the grey of the Iron Mountain and the Dartry hills.
County Leitrim Heritage
Leitrim is a long narrow county running from the Shannon lakes up to the sea, where it touches the Atlantic for barely two and a half miles at Tullaghan — the shortest coastline of any Irish county. Lough Allen fills its middle, Sliabh an Iarainn, the Iron Mountain, rises above it, and the waterfall at Glencar falls in the Dartry hills to the north.
This was West Breifne, the country of the O'Rourkes, whose kingdom stretched over the lakes and hills while the O'Reillys held East Breifne in what is now Cavan. Leitrim's heavy land and small farms were hard hit by the Great Famine and by the long emigration that followed, and few counties in Ireland have a wider family scattered across the world.
