How it all started

Territories

Clan Johnstone originated in the Scottish Borders, taking their name from lands near Lockerbie in Annandale. They rose to prominence in the 13th century as loyal defenders of the western marches and fierce rivals of neighboring clans, particularly the Maxwells. Known as one of the most powerful Border Reiver families, the Johnstones engaged in feuds, raids, and skirmishes that defined the turbulent Border region. Their strongholds included Lochwood Tower and later Raehills House, anchoring their influence throughout Dumfriesshire. Despite the volatile politics of the Borders, the Johnstones maintained regional dominance and earned noble titles such as Lords of Lochwood and Earls of Hartfell.

Clan Chief

The current Chief of Clan Johnstone is Patrick Andrew Wentworth Hope-Johnstone, the 11th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell. He is officially recognized by the Court of the Lord Lyon and continues to represent the clan’s noble heritage. The Johnstone crest—a winged spur—and the motto “Nunquam non paratus” (Never unprepared) reflect the clan’s readiness for defense and battle. Today, the clan maintains a global presence through heritage societies, with descendants proudly celebrating their Border roots.
