Hope Family Heritage
Sir Thomas Hope of Craighall was the great Lord Advocate of Scotland in the reign of Charles I, one of the foremost lawyers of his age, and the founder of the family's fortunes. His descendants, the Hopes of Hopetoun, married into the Foulis heiress of the rich Leadhills lead mines, and built the magnificent Hopetoun House near South Queensferry, one of the finest houses in Scotland.
Charles Hope was created Earl of Hopetoun in 1703, and the family rose to the highest service of the realm. General Sir John Hope, 4th Earl, distinguished himself in the Napoleonic Wars; the 7th Earl became the first Governor-General of Australia and was made Marquess of Linlithgow in 1902; and the 2nd Marquess served as Viceroy of India. The crest is a broken globe surmounted by a rainbow, and the motto At Spes Non Fracta.
