Henderson Tartan

The Henderson Tartan is a striking blend of traditional hues and dynamic detailing, designed to embody the noble heritage of Clan Henderson. At its core, a rich Forest Green background conveys a strong connection to the Highlands, evoking the deep woods and natural landscapes that defined clan life.

Overlaid across this earthy base are bold Royal BluePurple-Blue stripes—medium-width lines that bring depth and regality to the design. These cool tones create a harmonious interplay with the green, adding layers of history and identity.

Accents of Black form the tartan’s structure, appearing in smaller checkered blocks and stripe outlines to define the pattern with strength and stability. Interwoven among these are bright Yellow threads, delicately energizing the design with glints of Highland light.

Finally, fine lines of White thread—used sparingly—sharpen the edges and highlight key intersections, providing an elegant finishing touch that enhances contrast without overwhelming.

The Henderson Tartan is available in several distinguished styles to suit both ceremonial and casual occasions:

  • Henderson Ancient Tartan – Featuring softer, more faded tones to reflect an aged, ancestral look.
  • Henderson Modern Tartan – A bolder version with saturated greens, blues, and yellows that stand out in modern Highland fashion.
  • Henderson Dress Tartan – A brighter and more festive adaptation, ideal for formalwear and special celebrations.

How it all started

Territories

Clan Henderson, or MacEanruig in Gaelic, is a Lowland and Highland clan with ancient roots in both Caithness and the Scottish Borders. In the Highlands, they were closely associated with Clan MacDonald of Glencoe, often serving as hereditary pipers and bodyguards. In the south, they were known as a scholarly and ecclesiastical family.

Clan Chief

The modern chief of Clan Henderson is Alistair Donald Henderson of Fordell, who represents a family line that held the Barony of Fordell in Fife for centuries. The Hendersons of Fordell were a distinguished Lowland family, contributing significantly to Scotland's political and religious life during the 16th and 17th centuries.

Castle

Fordell Castle in Fife served as the seat of the Henderson chiefs and remains a powerful symbol of the clan’s presence in the Lowlands. Though privately owned today, it is an iconic reminder of the Hendersons’ historical significance.

Legacy

Clan Henderson’s tartan is recognized for its deep green, blue, and red hues. Members of the clan have contributed to Scottish history through religious leadership, education, and the arts. Today, the Henderson name is known globally, with clan societies active in the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia, preserving their proud heritage.

Fordell Castle - Clan Henderson History

Fordell Castle

Location: Fife, Scotland

Fordell Castle, nestled in the rolling hills of Fife, has been the ancestral seat of the Hendersons of Fordell for centuries. The Hendersons—known in Gaelic as “MacEanruig”—were a respected Lowland clan with strong historical ties to education, medicine, and military service.

While the exact origins of the castle date back to the medieval period, much of the current structure reflects renovations from the 16th century. The Hendersons of Fordell held the estate for over 500 years, distinguishing themselves in service to Scottish kings and universities.

Notably, Sir John Henderson of Fordell became a prominent Royalist commander during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. His loyalty to King Charles I earned him recognition and knighthood, and he defended his lands vigorously throughout the conflict.

Today, Fordell Castle remains privately owned, but it stands as a symbol of Clan Henderson’s enduring influence and their legacy of scholarship and honor. The Henderson tartan, bold in green and blue, continues to be worn with pride by descendants around the world.

While not open to the public, the legacy of Fordell Castle is remembered through Clan Henderson gatherings and historical research. It represents the resilience, intellect, and service that define the Henderson name across generations.
