About the County Galway Tartan
The Galway tartan is one of a complete set of thirty-two Irish county tartans designed by Polly Wittering for the House of Edgar of Perth in the 1990s. It is a district tartan — it belongs to the county rather than to any family, so anyone with a Galway connection may wear it.
These county setts are modern designs rather than ancient patterns, and are not formally sanctioned by the counties themselves; their strength lies in how warmly they have been adopted by Irish families, above all across the diaspora.
Galway Tartan Pattern and Colours
The sett draws on cool teals and greens with darker lines — the Atlantic water of the bay, the green of the Connemara bogland and the grey of quartzite and limestone that shape the county from the Twelve Bens to the Burren's northern edge.
County Galway Heritage
Galway is the second largest of the Irish counties, and falls into two worlds either side of Lough Corrib: the rich limestone plains of east Galway, and the mountain, bog and sea of Connemara in the west, where the Twelve Bens rise above one of the largest Gaeltacht areas in Ireland. Out in the bay lie the three Aran Islands, with the great stone fort of Dún Aonghasa on its cliff edge.
Galway city grew as a walled merchant town ruled by fourteen families known as the Tribes of Galway, trading wine with Spain and fish with half of Europe. From the Claddagh, the old fishing village outside the walls, came the Claddagh ring, given in friendship and love the world over; and from Connemara came the brown-sailed hookers that carried turf across the bay.
