How it all started

Territories

Clan Chisholm rose to prominence in the rugged and remote region of Strathglass in the Highlands of Scotland. Originally of Norman descent, the Chisholms established deep Highland roots by the 14th century through strategic marriage and land acquisition. Their lands included glens, forests, and rivers stretching through Inverness-shire, offering both natural defense and isolation. The clan was known for its fierce independence and military engagement, especially during the Jacobite risings of the 18th century.

Clan Chief

The current chief of Clan Chisholm is Andrew Francis Hamish Chisholm of Chisholm. The historic seat of the clan was Erchless Castle, a fortified tower house near Struy that dates back to the 15th century. The castle symbolized the strength and heritage of the Chisholm family for generations. Though no longer owned by the clan, Erchless Castle remains a proud emblem of Chisholm identity, representing a lineage marked by loyalty, courage, and a deep connection to Highland tradition.

Erchless Castle

Location: Struy, near Beauly, Highland, Scotland

Erchless Castle, located near the village of Struy in the Highlands, is the traditional seat of Clan Chisholm. The Chisholms are a clan of Norman origin that established deep Highland roots by the 14th century, gaining lands in Inverness-shire and forging strong ties with other Highland families.

The clan's rise began when Sir Robert de Cheseholme married into Scottish nobility and gained control over lands in the north. Their territory centered around Strathglass, a remote and rugged region ideal for both defense and Highland independence. Known for their warrior ethos, the Chisholms were involved in numerous clan conflicts and were supporters of the Jacobite cause in the 18th century.

Erchless Castle, dating from the 15th century with later expansions, served not only as a stronghold but also as a symbol of the clan’s endurance and adaptation through the centuries. Its towers and battlements reflect both its strategic purpose and its role as the heart of Chisholm leadership.

Although no longer owned by the clan, Erchless Castle remains a lasting emblem of the Chisholm legacy. It continues to evoke the spirit of a family deeply connected to Highland history, courage, and tradition.

Clan Chisholm’s name endures among its descendants worldwide, with many looking to Erchless Castle as a powerful reminder of their proud and noble heritage.
