About the Campbell Clan Tartan
The Scottish Register of Tartans records Campbell as a Clan/Family tartan, and it is among the most familiar of all setts: the dark blue and green Campbell sett was recorded as early as 1739, and is closely related to the Black Watch pattern worn by the Highland regiments.
Alongside it are the branch tartans of Campbell of Argyll, Campbell of Breadalbane, Campbell of Cawdor and Campbell of Loudoun. The chief is the Duke of Argyll, known in Gaelic as Mac Cailein Mòr; the plant badge is bog myrtle, the slogan Cruachan, and the motto Ne Obliviscaris.

Campbell Heritage
The name comes from the Gaelic caimbeul, crooked mouth, a nickname carried by an early chief. The family's hold on Argyll came through marriage to the heiress of the O'Duibhne, which brought them the lordship of Loch Awe, and their Gaelic patronymic honours Cailean Mòr, Colin the Great, killed in 1296 — from him the chiefs are Mac Cailein Mòr to this day.
Loyal service to Robert the Bruce and to the Stewart kings brought steady reward: the chiefs became Earls of Argyll in 1457 and Dukes in 1701, moving their seat from Loch Awe to Inveraray on Loch Fyne, with Castle Campbell near Dollar among their Lowland holdings. For centuries they acted as the Crown's principal agents in the western Highlands, and that rise brought long rivalry with neighbours such as the MacDonalds and MacLeans — a history still remembered on all sides.
