Explore the history of Clan Buchanan

How it all started

Territories

Clan Buchanan has ancient roots stretching back to the early medieval period in the lands surrounding Loch Lomond. Their ancestral homeland was located primarily in the parish of Buchanan, Stirlingshire, on the eastern shores of Loch Lomond, where they held lands granted by the Earls of Lennox in the 13th century. The clan flourished for centuries in this lush Highland landscape, with its seat at Buchanan Auld House until it was succeeded by the grand Buchanan Castle in the 19th century.

Clan Chief

Clan Buchanan was without a chief for over 340 years until 2018, when John Michael Baillie-Hamilton Buchanan was officially recognized as Chief of Clan Buchanan by the Lord Lyon King of Arms. Today, the clan is one of the most globally dispersed Scottish clans, with a strong international following and organized societies across the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The clan motto, "Clarior Hinc Honos" ("Brighter Hence the Honour"), reflects the enduring pride and legacy of the Buchanans across the centuries.

Clan Buchanan Heritage & Historical Seat

Clan Buchanan Heritage

Location: Loch Lomond, Stirlingshire, Scotland

Clan Buchanan is one of Scotland’s most historic Highland clans, with ancient roots stretching back to the Kingdom of Dalriada. Their traditional homeland lies on the eastern shores of Loch Lomond, where the clan flourished for centuries amidst the scenic beauty of Stirlingshire.

The Buchanan chiefs once held their seat at Clairinch Island, a sacred and strategic location in Loch Lomond, before relocating to Buchanan Castle near Drymen in the 19th century. The castle, a grand Victorian baronial residence, served as the family home of the Buchanan chiefs until it fell into disrepair after World War II.

Buchanan Castle was also used as a military hospital during the war and is remembered as the place where Rudolf Hess, Hitler’s deputy, was briefly held after crash-landing in Scotland. Today, the castle stands as a romantic ruin, surrounded by golf courses and tranquil woodlands.

Clan Buchanan is renowned for its contributions to Scottish history, particularly during the Wars of Independence. Their motto, “Clarior hinc honos” (Henceforth forward the honour shall grow brighter), reflects their legacy of loyalty, honour, and service.

The vibrant Buchanan tartan, with its rich gold, green, and red hues, remains a symbol of clan pride. Today, the clan is led by a recognized chief and continues to thrive globally, celebrating reunions, preserving historical ties, and promoting their proud Highland heritage.
