Brisbane Family Heritage
The name appears in Scottish record from the late 13th century, and by around 1400 the Brisbanes of Bishopton had acquired the lands of Killincraig and Goga in the parish of Largs. In 1695 a Crown charter erected the estate into the barony of Brisbane, and the family were thereafter styled Brisbane of Brisbane. For over four centuries they were among the leading families of the Ayrshire coast, their seat at Brisbane House in Noddsdale near Largs.
The name's most famous son was Sir Thomas Brisbane (1773–1860), soldier and astronomer, who served with distinction under Wellington before becoming Governor of New South Wales in 1821 — the great Australian city of Brisbane is named in his honour. A devoted man of science, he was the first president of what became the Royal Society of New South Wales. He died at Largs and rests in the Brisbane vault by the old kirk.
