About the Blackstock Tartan
The Blackstock name is a rare and old one, meaning "black tree trunk" — an image carried straight onto the family arms, which bear three black tree-trunks on silver. Long associated with the Border country around Dumfries, the Blackstocks are recognised as a sept of both Clan Maxwell and Clan Douglas, and so may wear those great clans' tartans. The family also has its own distinctive Blackstock tartan, registered in 1982.
This collection celebrates the Blackstock name and its Border heritage, bringing the Blackstock and Maxwell tartans into apparel, accessories, home decor and heritage gifts for those who carry the name or trace their line to the Dumfries country and beyond.
Blackstock Tartan Colours
The Blackstock tartan is a warm sett of red and green with strong black bands and a fine line of gold — a special weave of its own. Those who prefer may also wear the Maxwell tartan, a bold red-based sett, through the family's long Maxwell connection in the Dumfries country.

Blackstock Family Heritage
The Blackstocks were recognised as a family of standing by about 1565, when the arms of "Blackstock of that Ilk" were recorded in the Lyon Court's Workman Manuscript. Many of the name lived in the Dumfries country, and in 1570 John Blakstok set his hand to the Band of Dumfries, binding the family to the powerful Maxwells. The name runs through the records of the south-west — merchants, tenants, tanners and shoemakers of Dumfries and the Border parishes across the centuries.
Like many Border families, the Blackstocks were among the Scotch-Irish who crossed first to Ulster and then to America, where the name became well known — the seventh-largest battle of the American Revolution was fought at Blackstock's Farm in South Carolina. A grace note at home: Gilbert Burns named Miss Jane Blackstock as the heroine of his brother Robert Burns' poem "O Poortith Cauld."
