About the Alberta Tartan
The Alberta tartan is the official tartan of the province, adopted by an Act of the Legislature on 30 March 1961. It is a district tartan rather than a clan sett, so it belongs to the place and to everyone connected with it — no clan membership required.
The design began at the Edmonton Rehabilitation Society, a charity set up to teach useful skills to people with disabilities. It was drawn up by Alison Lamb, the Society's director, and Ellen Neilsen, its weaving instructor — a tartan born, fittingly, on a teaching loom.
Alberta Tartan Pattern and Colours
Every colour in the sett stands for something: green for the province's forests, gold for its fields of wheat and its sunshine, blue for the skies and lakes, black for the coal and petroleum beneath the ground, and a fine line of pink for the wild rose, Alberta's floral emblem.
Alberta Tartan Heritage
Alberta was settled in large numbers by Scots and by Scottish-Canadians moving west, and Highland societies, pipe bands and Burns suppers have been part of provincial life since the earliest towns. A tartan of its own gave the province a way to join that tradition on its own terms.
The sett has been worn since 1961 by pipe bands, civic groups, provincial delegations and by Albertans at home and abroad. There is also a dress version, lighter in ground, used for formal occasions — and both are open to anyone with an Alberta connection, whatever their family name.
